Oskar Schindler – The Man Behind the List.
An interesting ‘companion piece’ to the movie. While your main resource will be the visual text, the documentary adds layers to Schindler’s character.
Gloomy Sunday May 28, 2013

In the scene where we first see Oskar Schindler (the one that focuses on his hands) there is a piece of music playing in the background. This is a slightly stylized version of a ‘classic’ called Gloomy Sunday (Rezső Seress) and is morbidly appropriate as a prelude.
There was a film made in 2003 called Gloomy Sunday about the origins of the piece and it has some connections to Schindler’s List. It is worth watching – but only over a very melancholy weekend (and it has subtitles)

Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstanceI have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find me, unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate;
I am the captain of my soul.
